Show & Tell

Three members had carvings to show at the meeting.

First, Ernest displayed a relief carving he made out of a piece of scrap wood. He was unsure what kind of wood it was but said it was not basswood -- the wood was hard to carve. He used this carving to test a variety of coloring techniques using colored pencils, leather dye, and pastel chalks. He also made a walking cane from a reed that he grows in his backyard which is similar to, but not, bamboo. He said this wood is lighter in weight than bamboo and doesn't crack like bamboo does. The cane topper came from an old umbrella and he used a piece of PVC pipe to connect the top to the cane.

Next, Jon displayed a fisherman from a roughout he obtained in a class he took at the Central Indiana Woodcarvers Roundup. He used a couple of real "fly" hooks -- one on the fishing pole and the other on the fisherman's hat. He also carved a christmas ornament and a decorative "love" spoon.

Lastly, Butch displayed six carvings -- four Christmas ornaments and two decorative "love" spoons -- one with grapes and the other with "cattails" both of which are edible.

The Quilt of Valor

The local "Quilts of Valor" chapter honored Butch Barnes' service in the U.S. Navy by presenting him with a 'Quilt of Valor' on Monday, June 5th. This quilt is an expression of gratitude meant to thank and comfort veterans of the U.S. military services. They honored Butch for leaving all he held dear to serve our country in a time of crisis. This Quilt of Valor unequivocally says thank you for his service, sacrifice, and valor in serving our nation.
